Amidst the uncertainty currently surrounding the property market, one Manchester property developer is proving that the economic climate doesn’t have to put a freeze on development with their eagerly anticipated Ice Plant scheme which is due to commence this month.
northerngroup will be embarking on their second mixed-use residential scheme in Ancoats which will see the complete renovation of the attractive and iconic Ice Plant building on Blossom Street. The development will be a mixture of refurbishment and complimentary new build and will consist of 82 residential units of between 1 and 3 bedrooms, including penthouses, with commercial retail units to the ground floor. There will also be secure basement parking, including an innovative car lift.
The Ice Plant was originally built in c. 1860 for the storage of fruit, vegetables and fish and had an attached Ice Making plant from which it acquired its name. In the 1880’s the immigrant Italian community in Ancoats took great advantage from the Ice Plant’s surplus ice with over 70 ice cream barrow businesses found in the area.
Artisan Construction Group have been awarded the building contract and will start on site on 12th May with completion due in the summer of 2010. The first phase has recently been released for sale off-plan with six apartments already snapped up.
The apartments will benefit from a larger than average living space with units in the refurbished building enjoying exposed brickwork and high ceilings. Each apartment will be kitted out to a high specification including stylish kitchens with a full range of integrated appliances and luxury designer bathrooms with extra touches such as under floor heating.
The Ice Plant is ideally located in the heart of Ancoats Urban Village, just a stone’s throw, yet peaceful retreat, from the city’s vibrant Northern Quarter. The village itself is a conservation area currently benefiting from huge public and private investment which will see the area once again on its way to becoming a vibrant community by the time of completion. Works have begun on a public sunken square adjacent to the Ice Plant will also benefit residents, providing an attractive open space and adding to a real sense of community.
